Index 2014-2024 is a collection of ten years worth of photography by Jordanna Kalman. The book is made up of 219 archival inkjet prints of Kalman’s images tipped into the book The History of Photography by Beaumont Newhall, fourth edition (1978).
The original books were acquired used, so they have a history even before they were altered by Kalman. Many of the copies have flaws and show wear. Each book is assembled by hand by the artist, which allows for even more imperfection. The insertion of Kalman’s work into the books causes them to grow and become unwieldy, stepping outside of a standard photobook format and becoming sculptural.
The book includes an introduction by the artist, 14 series in 14 chapters, and an artist statement for each series at the end. Included in the book are a selection of large projects like Little Romances and time-based work, as well as smaller series like nine planets and the hole sea.
For the last five years, Kalman’s work has mainly been centered around her relationship with the male dominated history of photography and how that shaped her eye and practice from a young age. Using the Newhall book to present her work seemed only natural, as it lacks women photographers; only 13 out of 300 photographs in the book are by women (that’s 4%).
Through its construction, Index 2014-2024 represents the demand for recognition and inclusion in the photo world and also challenges the formality of a typical monograph.
